The structured design methodologies follow a formal step by step approach moving logically from one phase to the next. The two most famous structured design methodologies are 'Waterfall Development' and 'Parallel Development'.

Waterfall Development
The software is developed moving from one phase to the next in accordance with the SDLC fundamental phases (planning, analysis, design & implementation).

Parallel Development
This methodology is similar to the waterfall one with one difference. Instead of completing each one of the phases for the whole project the project is divided into small projects and each one of the phases is implemented separately for each one of them. This way, the development process is carried on concurrently and separately for each one of the small sub projects.

The agile methodologies are programming centric methodologies with few simple rules to follow via a simple iterative development process eliminating most of the modeling and the documentation overhead.

Lean Software Development
Eliminating waste while selecting the truly valued features only. Automated testings are developed the same time the code is written. This methodology owns most of its principles and practices to the Lean Enterprise Movement and the practical experiences gathered within companies as Toyota.

Scrum Project Management
Management framework for managing agile development projects while being focused on the management aspects.

Extreme Programming
One of the most popular agile software development methodologies. Focuses on technical practice and skillful development through frequently delivered releases. Its main characteristic are the highly short iterations comparing with the other agile methodologies.

The rapid development methodologies rapidly get some part of the system up and running allowing to get users feedback to ensure the whole system progresses in the right decision.

Phased Development
Sequentially develop the system in separated versions. Highly common when developing web sites that provide private users with a service.

Prototype Development
The development process first aims at developing a prototype as fast as possible. Once completed it is possible to gather some feedback before moving forward with the development process.

Throwaway Prototype Development
Throughout the development process various throwaway prototypes are developed. Those throwaway prototypes assist sorting out various questions raised during the process.
